The Government of India has announced sweeping GST reforms that will officially kick in from September 22, 2025 — the first day of Navratri. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a “transformative step” that will not only ease citizens’ lives but also provide a major boost to the economy.

From daily-use products to cars, tractors, health insurance, and appliances, the new GST rates are set to make essential items more affordable for millions of Indians.

Key Highlights of GST Reforms 2025

1. Daily-Use Goods Get Cheaper

  • Hair oil, shampoo, toothpaste, soaps, toothbrushes, shaving cream: 5% GST (down from 18%)
  • Dairy products (butter, ghee, cheese, packaged snacks): 5% GST (down from 12%)
  • Utensils, feeding bottles, baby napkins, diapers: 5% GST

2. Relief for Farmers

  • Tractor tyres & parts: 5% GST (down from 18%)
  • Tractors: 5% GST (down from 12%)

3. Big Boost for Healthcare Sector

  • Health & life insurance policies: Fully GST-exempt
  • Thermometers, oxygen kits, diagnostic kits, glucometers: 5% GST (down from 12%)
  • Corrective spectacles: 5% GST

4. Education Items Now Tax-Free

  • Maps, charts, globes, pencils, crayons, sharpeners: Nil GST
  • Notebooks, exercise books, erasers: Nil GST

5. Major Cuts in Automobile Sector

  • Petrol, LPG, CNG, Hybrid cars (≤1200 cc, ≤4000 mm length): 18% GST (down from 28%)
  • Diesel & Hybrid cars (≤1500 cc): 18% GST (down from 28%)
  • Motorcycles up to 350 cc, three-wheelers, goods transport vehicles: 18% GST

6. High-End Appliances Become Affordable

  • ACs, TVs (above 32”), projectors, dishwashers: 18% GST (down from 28%)

Why This Matters

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said:

“This rationalisation and simplification in GST reforms will make people’s lives easier. It will also give a huge push to India’s GDP through higher consumption.”

According to estimates, even a 10% rise in consumption could add ₹20 lakh crore extra to India’s GDP.
